The Richard James Galleries in Charleston, SC, Presents Iconic Photographic Images of the 20th Century

Joe Rosenthal

The Richard James Galleries in Charleston, SC, is pleased to announce the exhibition and sale of photographs from the world's most important archives of photographic images. This exhibition includes some of the most highly recognized and beloved images ever taken including the signed Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of the Flag Raising at Iwo Jima by Joe Rosenthal. Beginning in 1936, LIFE was the first published magazine to focus on photojournalism, revolutionizing American culture by becoming a weekly custom of visual intimacy throughout American households, and indeed the world.

The LIFE Gallery of Photography represents a collection of some of these photographs: the most recognized and historical images of the 20th Century that continue to influence us generations later. The Associated Press is the world's oldest and largest newsgathering organization and has a photo archive comprised of over 60 million images. The Associated Press has been honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Photography 28 times since the inception of this award; some of which are exhibited for the first time in Charleston through this inaugural exhibition at the Richard James Galleries.

Nat Fein

Nat Fein is world-renowned for his touching, humorous and compelling photographs. A press photographer for the New York Herald Tribune for thirty-three years, Fein is well-known for his ability to capture the soul of a bygone era in New York City. Fein won the Pulitzer Prize in 1949 for what is arguably the most celebrated photograph in sports history, The Babe Bows Out, exclusively offered here as a 20" x 24" limited edition photograph.

The National Geographic Collection is comprised of images from the photographic archives of The National Geographic Society, one of the world's largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations. On exhibit at the gallery are works by Annie Griffiths Belt, featured in her book LAST STAND: Americas Virgin Lands, which documents the landscape of America in exquisite hand-tinted color photographs.
