September Issue 2004
Wells Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by George Pate
George Pate's first one man show in the Lowcountry, Coastal Vision, opens at the Wells Gallery on Sept. 2 and continues through Sept. 16, 2004. A resident of the Southeast since 1957 and Santa Fe, NM, since 1977, Pate's show depicts the beauty of the coast. During the spring Pate visited the Lowcountry to paint en plein air and successfully created Coastal Vision.
A graduate of North
Dakota State University as a registered architect Pate owned his
own architecture firm for 25 years and throughout those years
he continued to paint. Now a full time artist Pate is a Signature
Member of Oil Painters of America, a member of Rocky Mountain
Plein Air Painters and Watercolor West. Pate's affinity for landscape
stems from his many travels throughout the US, Japan, Canada,
Mexico and Europe. The works in oil reflect both realism and impressionism
and consistently display his understanding of the essentials of
form, color, and composition.
Pate explains, "Coastal Vision is a celebration of
the unique light that shines brightly upon the Lowcountry's water's
edge and surrounding scenery. The distant palms, pines, and live
oaks cloaked in the thick mists over the Lowcountry provide an
exciting painting experience. With echoing timelessness, there
is an invitation to drift to the islands and walk the city streets.
One is drawn to the flower draped gates and supple marshlands
- the inclination is to linger there in a place of silent beauty
of coastal visions."
Pate fully inhabits
each landscape he paints, extracting the essence that resides
in the soul of the land, and releasing its poetry onto the surface
of his canvas.
