City Gallery at Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Mark Bump
The City Gallery at Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, is presenting the exhibit, The Violence of Voyeurism, featuring works in steel, wood and found objects by Charleston artist, Mark Bump. The exhibition will be on view through Sept. 22, 2005.
After receiving his BA in Fine Arts from the College of Charleston in 2002, Bump continued to make art for his own gratification. Interest in both political science and psychology are intrinsic to Bump's art, especially sculpture, which is his true passion. Bump's home studio was used to construct the works for this collection. He is actively applying to graduate school where he hopes to receive a Masters in Fine Arts in Sculpture.
Bump offers the following about his work. "The works in this collection is a reaction to the world wide fascination with voyeurism. For example, people eagerly watching people - the paparazzi, reality television focusing on marriages, births, plastic surgery and the increased government monitoring of its populace and real time coverage of conflicts. Above all, this illustrates that everything a modern person does is subject to thorough scrutiny. Like brain washed zombies, we passively watch others watching us. My views of the world dictate the works of this collection, which is intended to force the viewers outside of their voyeuristic bubble. In order to understand the full scope of each work, the viewer must interact with it, involving ones self to the personal level of touch, a concept completely lost through mass media."
