Hayes George Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Group Exhibition
Hayes George Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibit, The Surface, featuring a group exhibition by gallery artists Michel Beaucage, Cynthia Fusillo, Michael Kessler, Mayme Kratz, Kit Reuther, Allison Stewart, Delos Van Earl, and Hiro Yokose. The exhibit will be on view through Oct. 1, 2005. As the title of the show implies the exhibition focuses on surface texture as a predominant element in the composition.
Michael Kessler
Michael Kessler debuts several new works. The new paintings appear to be doors or windows into nature. In taking the time to study one piece, you'll see past the polished surface, the works are like maps with various layers and color peeled away, revealing nuances with each emerging layer. Kessler's surfaces are achieved by a self perfected technique of applying pigment in layers. He builds the surface one layer at a time often as many as 100. Finishing the piece with a glassed veneer to seal the painting onto wood.
Michel Beaucage
The work of Michel Beaucage speaks to nature as well. The beautiful fluid botanical forms have a wonderful sense of movement. Along with the unique texture, Beaucage's ability to capture and hold light is of equal importance to the surface. His use of ceramic medium in the paint allows the light to play across the painting, adding dimension.
Kit Reuther
It is the use of light and reflection in Kit Reuther's work one notices strait away. The quiet simple forms in her still life paintings are made to feel extraordinary as highlights and shadow dance. The impasto application of the paint crates tension between the picture plain and the painted image. The viewer is constantly moving between the surface and the subject mimicking the dance preformed by light and shadow.
