Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head island, SC, Features Works by Don & Susan Knight
The Hilton Head Art League will feature an exhibition and sale of one-of-a-kind art dolls created by the husband and wife team of Don & Susan Knight at the Art League Gallery in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island, SC, through Sept. 10, 2005.
Creating one of a kind art dolls presents many challenges to achieve a perfect character. The heads and hands are individually hand-sculpted of polymer clay by Susan; no molds are used. Only the highest quality glass eyes and mohair are used to enhanced each face. The clothing is made of carefully selected natural reclaimed fabrics, antique buttons and luxury furs.
Don makes an armature of wood and wire for each figure before placing it on a hand-turned base made of local woods. Each character they create is a "reflection" of someone, and each has a name and sometimes a story to go with it.
Susan and Don came to work together in art from different backgrounds. Don worked in pharmaceutical research at Burroughs Wellcome Co. in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina and Susan as an interior designed and antique dealer. Don's research project had them living in London for two years where they spent many days at the Victoria and Albert Museum, studying the Victorian Peddler Dolls which were their inspiration for the dolls they now make.
