Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Sue and Bill McFarland
The Hilton Head Art League will be presenting the work of the husband and wife team of Sue and Bill McFarland at the Art League Gallery in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island, SC, beginning on Sept. 13 through Oct. 10, 2005. The McFarlands produce wearable art, such as scarves, jewelry and handbags, as well as sculptural art, such as baskets.
Sue McFarland is a fiber artist who became interested in sewing and fabrics as a child and began by sewing dolls' dresses. Upon retirement in 1989, she began taking classes in basket weaving. Since then she has been drawn to working with natural materials and continues to find increasingly unusual weaving materials. She will often incorporate dried gourds or use pieces of slate or driftwood as pedestals for her baskets.
Bill McFarland practiced orthodontics for 32 years in Lima, OH. Given his background of working with his hands and with metal, he gravitated towards working in sterling silver after meeting a jewelry artisan. After numerous courses in fine metals at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, he now makes striking pieces of jewelry. This is the first time the McFarlands have combined their talents for a collaborative show at the Hilton Head Art League Gallery.
Sue will be demonstrating her techniques at the gallery on Sept. 14 and Sept. 28 from 11am-2pm. Come by to how she develops her unique designs.
The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the community and increasing the art skills of its members.
