Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Offers Fabulous Fakes

Lynn Parrott

The Hilton Head Art League will hold a sale of Fabulous Fakes on Sept. 17, 2005, from 11am-4pm. It is an event that is much anticipated by the community and loved by the artists. This year's Fabulous Fakes event will be held at the Hilton Head Art League Gallery in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island, SC, and in the surrounding courtyard.

If you've ever dreamed of owning an original Renoir, Matisse or Chagall, now you can own the next best thing an original copy of a great master's work by an Art League artist. All of the paintings (and some sculptures) are signed by the artist (the Hilton Head Art League artist, that is) and available at very affordable prices.

In the past, some artists have included some small deviations from the original, just to clearly differentiate the piece and to have some fun with the subject. One year, Jack Williamson put red high heels on a Degas ballerina and a Starbucks sign on a VanGogh café scene. Don Nagel turned the train in Monet's Gare St. Lazare into a children's toy train. Who knows what surprises await the audience this time.

This year, more than 35 artists have produced the most fabulous, Fabulous Fakes. Some are still in the making. The selections include works by Matisse, Monet, VanGogh, Renoir, Klimt, Winslow Homer, Redon, Picasso, Lautrec, Vermeer, and Mary Cassatt. These works have been executed in oils, pastels, watercolors and acrylics. Will any of them have unique twists or surprises? You'll have to see for yourself.

Lynn Parrot painted a copy of Henri Matisse's 1907 Mme. Matisse: Madras Rouge, while Mary Jane Martin brings us Matisse's Goldfish. Ted Jordan painted a Vermeer, Woman in Red Hat.

Making copies of the works of the masters is a common teaching technique. Art school students learn to understand color, composition, brushwork and other characteristics that make a painting great by copying the work of great artists. "Doing a copy for Fabulous Fakes is an event that I look forward to each time," says David Musial, who is working on a sculpture reminiscent of one by Daumier. "It gives us an opportunity to learn all over again, while having a lot of fun."

The merchants in Pineland Station are excited about the event as well. Many will be opening their shops with special sales and coordinated events on that day.  The French Bakery, Tanner, Heritage Fine Jewelry, Yenny's Handbag Boutique, Tradewinds Ladies Apparel and Merle Norman Cosmetics will be collaborating to present two fashion shows in the courtyard area near the French Bakery; one at 10:30am and the second at 2:30pm. The Silver Showroom will be offering discounts during this event. Baskets by Jean Inc. will be providing a sampling of foods. Idyllic Endeavors will be playing up the French theme, while Island Bath Boutique will be offering a 10% discount on their entire inventory. An Added Touch will be featuring a flower vendor and the Paper and Party Plantation will be participating as well. All of Pineland Station will be a part of this year's Fabulous Fakes event.

In addition, Hilton Head Art League artist, Kaytee Esser, will be demonstrating her painting techniques outdoors in the courtyard during the day. Her contribution to the show is a copy of a VanGogh, The Peasant.

The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit membership organization, dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the community and increasing the art skills of its members. For more than 30 years, the Art League has been providing numerous art related events, workshops with nationally renowned art instructors and classes taught by local artists in a variety of art forms at the Art Academy on Cordillo Parkway.

The Hilton Head Art League Gallery in Pineland Station presents the work of its member artists. Each month a particular, outstanding artist is showcased. The featured artist in September, is Terry Brennan. His show, Lowcountry Palette, runs through Sept. 24, 2005.
