Artists' Guild of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by Kate Thayer
The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg is hosting an exhibit of works by Kate Thayer entitled, Seeing Nature's Whispers, on view from Sept. 2 - 30, 2005, at the Guild Gallery in the Spartanburg Arts Center in Spartanburg, SC.
Thayer, who works in pastel on sanded Wallis paper, works out of her studio in Saluda, NC. "I work in pastels, because the feelings engendered by the feel of the pastels on the rich papers I use are themselves experiences that I attempt to reveal in my paintings," Thayer said. In her work she attempts to capture what is familiar in nature so that viewers can see those beauties in nature that often escape notice, giving voice to what she call "nature's hidden sorceries".
"I paint to enrich my soul and to enrich the souls and senses of those who look upon my work," Thayer says. "I do it to explore - with the fascinated viewer - who I am becoming as a person as I recreate a place that captured my heart and my imagination. I would wish the same sweet stimulation for those who grasp what I am after in my work."
Thayer is a graduate of Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin. She describes herself as a "self-taught' pastelist, having studied the genre and absorbed what she feels are the best aspects of other pastelists. She has been featured in solo, duo and three-person shows in the area and is an active member of the Degas Pastel Society and the Southeastern Pastel Society.
