SOLO Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by les caison III
Coming Home, a solo exhibition for les caison III featuring new oil paintings of musicians, streetscapes and urban interiors, is on view at SOLO Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, through Sept. 28, 2005. Using a combination of graphite and oil, caison paints in a contemporary style that is very unique.
Born in the North Carolina Piedmont, caison graduated from Appalachian State University with a BFA in 1998 and now resides in the North Carolina mountains. He describes his technique as using multiple layers of oil paint to intertwine with graphite illustrations of people, places and things. His narrative paintings house social commentary, fostering emotional exploration or offering lighthearted moments to consider. "I enjoy provoking because it stirs emotion and consciousness, and that's part of the responsibility of being an artist. It's not just entertainment."
caison creates paintings in two formats. Birch panels are used for smaller scale paintings, while canvas is used for larger pieces. Both formats include initial sketches meshed with layers of oil color. caison makes the frames for his paintings, floating the images in a wooden framework left natural or painted black. Recent works in all sizes will be on exhibit at the gallery.
In 2003, caison was the recipient of a Regional Artist Project Grant. Using recycled materials, he created over 200 illustrations of multicultural expressions of urban freedom. He will be exhibiting the entire body of work at the Hickory Museum of Art in Fall 2005, where they will be tacked to the gallery wall in an installation format. He also has a growing body of commissioned portraits and murals for companies and individual collectors across the USA.
For Coming Home, caison has explored the inner world of musicians and the urban landscape they inhabit. Previous reviews of his work have commented on the psychological implications inherent in his work and the objectivity he has shown as an observer of human nature. Many collectors have delighted in these explorations of humanity and appreciate his urban style and imagery. His current body of work clearly demonstrates all of his previous strengths and also shows his continued growth and maturity as an artist.
