Artful Living in Hickory, NC, Features Works by Andrew Atkin
Artful Living located on Level Three at the Hickory Furniture Mart, in Hickory, NC, will present an exhibition by mixed media specialist Andrew Atkin. The exhibition will be on view from Sept. 1 - 30, 2006.
Atkin established "Amorak Studio", his home studio in Granite Falls, NC, in 1987 and since then his works have gained continual recognition throughout the area. He has been recognized as a recipient of various awards in painting and drawing, including the Nancy T. Alexander Emerging Artist Grant for 1992 and 1993 for the Southeast region.
Atkin has served as an art instructor with the Suzuki School of the Arts for K-12 children in Hickory. He has also been an arts instructor at the Hickory Museum of Art, Caldwell Community College and Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory. Atkin currently teaches at Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton, NC.
Atkin earned his BFA degree with honors in painting from Eastern Kentucky University. Additionally, he earned his Masters degree in the visual arts/painting program from Western Carolina University.
Atkin had the following to say about his work, "Painting in an intuitive process is not as easy as it may seem. I tend to begin analyzing my work almost immediately, rather than just executing it without any preconceived notions. Because I choose to work as intuitively as possible, I feel that it is time at this point in my career to give myself permission to take creative risks and liberties and not concern myself about the outcome or visual consequences, whatever they may be. In my new paintings I try to convey a sense of this intuitiveness with pure emotion and passion on a non-representation basis."
"Some of my paintings depict elements of nature in a purely abstract reference," continues Atkin. "In others, I evoke a sense of mystery and visual drama, especially by my use of many dark or light colors in the undercoating, which peek through the layers of applied paint or collage. A few of my works are nothing to me but literal harmonies of various feelings and emotions that I just happen to carry into the studio that day."
