The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art in Charleston, SC, Presents Works by Four Adjunct Faculty Members
The Halsey Institute
of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston's School of the
Arts is hosting the exhibit, Recent Works: Yvette Dede, Erik
Johnson, Sharon Lacey, and Lynne Riding, on view through Sept.
22, 2006.
All of the participating artists in this exhibition are dedicated,
full-time adjunct faculty members of the College of Charleston's
Department of Studio Art. The Halsey Institute has hosted a number
of past exhibitions that showcase the work of studio art faculty.
These exhibitions give both the public and the College communities
an opportunity to see the diversity of approach, technique, and
talent of these professors. This exhibition enables students to
view their professors' works, often for the first time, while
also serving as a teaching tool for studio art professors.
Yvette Dede
Yvette Dede is from New Orleans, LA, and moved to Charleston in 1991. Her artistic efforts include collaborative sculpture installations throughout the United States and one in the Czech Republic. In 1994, she and her collaborators were awarded the Installation/Collaboration Project Grant, from the North Carolina Cultural Council and the Alternate Visions Grant, from Alternate Roots of Atlanta. In addition to site works, Dede draws; her drawing installations were included in the Triennial 2001 and 2004. She was an active member
of the South Carolina Arts Commission Artist in Residency program
from 1994-1998, where she worked numerous artist residencies in
public schools throughout the state. Currently, Dede is a full-time
adjunct drawing professor at the College of Charleston. Dede received
her BFA from Louisiana State University - Baton Rouge and her
MFA from Vermont College, Montpelier, VT.
Erik Johnson
Erik Johnson has worked at the College for four years as sculpture instructor and studio manager. His preferred sculptural medium is cast iron, and he shares his passion for iron with students in the annual Cougar Iron Pour. Johnson also takes iron on the road for public workshops and community projects at locations such as Redux Contemporary Art Center, Sumter High School, and the River Oaks Art Center of Alexandria, LA.
Sharon Lacey
Sharon Lacey is a native of Charleston. She graduated from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where she earned degrees in both Art and English. In 1995, Lacey was accepted to study art and literature at Oxford University's Keble College. While there she trained in stone carving at Keble College's Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Lacey moved to New York in 1999 to pursue graduate work in painting. In May 2001, she completed her MFA under the instruction of Eric Fischl at the New York Academy of Art. Lacey's art training has primarily focused on traditional techniques and materials, with particular emphasis on the human figure. She has exhibited work both in the United Kingdom and the United States, including Washington, DC, New York, and Boston. In 2003, Lacey returned to Charleston to take a position in the College's Department of Studio Art, where she currently teaches painting and drawing.
Lynne Riding
Lynne Riding, a native of Knighton, Mid-Wales, received her two-year art foundation from Hereford College of Art & Design, followed by a BA from Manchester School of Art, both in the United Kingdom, and later, her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. After receiving her BA, Riding resided in London, taking on varied international commissions for London, Paris and New York, while also teaching figure drawing, design and painting, in a part time capacity at a central London college. During this period, she was included in Best of European Illustration, London. Prior to moving to the United States, Riding taught for five years at Falmouth School of Art, in the West of England, con-currently serving on a board at Plymouth College of Art & Design. During this period, invitational blocks of teaching were also undertaken in the capacity of visiting artist/professor, for colleges such as Maidenhead, Plymouth and Epsom. Riding has shown her work in numerous solo and group exhibits nationally in addition to receiving a number of residencies. Since 1998 she has taught at the College of Charleston as a full-time adjunct professor of fine art, while continuing to develop her personal work.
In conjunction with
this exhibit The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art will offer
a Friday lecture series. The schedule is as follows: Sept. 1-Yvette
Dede, Sept. 8- Erik Johnson, Sept. 15- Sharon Lacey, and Sept.
22- Lynne Riding.
