Hilton Head Art League on Hilton Head Island, SC, Offers Works by Clay Kittinger
Through the medium of watercolor and acrylics, artist Clay Kittinger will share his reflections on life and places in an exhibit at the Hilton Head Art League Gallery in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island, SC. The exhibit will be on view through Sept. 23, 2006.
Originally from northeast Ohio, Kittinger holds a degree in Civil Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and practiced engineering for over forty years before retiring to Hilton Head Island in 1992. He's spent his retirement years improving his art skills, having studied with Joyce Nagel and Lynda Potter locally. Prior to coming to Hilton Head, he studied at the Trumbull Art Guild in Warren, OH.
Kittinger's paintings can be seen in the Hilton Head Art League Gallery and the Hilton Head Plantation House. He is a member of the Hilton Head Art League, the Hilton Head Plantation Artists Association, and the South Carolina Watercolor Society.
"Usually my paintings reflect the life and environment of the lowcountry and are taken from photographs or remembered scenes," says Kittinger. "At times, our past life in Ohio will come to mind and I will paint them as remembered, or from old photos or slides. Memories of apple farms in the Fall or a maple sugaring shed in late February or early March represent such scenes."
Though landscapes and seascapes are frequent subjects for Kittinger, he tells us that scenes including human involvement are his favorites. He points to a clothesline with drying laundry or artists with their paintings as examples of paintings he particularly enjoys doing. Says Kittinger, "How better to capture the beauty of the planet we call home, than through art. I feel privileged to have been given a small measure of talent so that I might share that with others."
As a member of the South Carolina Watercolor Society, Kittinger served as exhibition chairman of the Society's 2001 annual exhibition here on Hilton Head Island. He has served as president of the Hilton Head Plantation Artists Association and is active in the Hilton Head Art League.
