Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting Nicora Gangi and Veronica Clark in an exhibition titled, Inside Out. This will be the debut exhibition at Shain for both artists who have recently joined the gallery's stable of artists. The show will open on Sept. 8 and will be on view through Sept. 30, 2006.
Nicora Gangi
Nicora Gangi attended The Hartford Art School, Connecticut, Montclair State College and Syracuse University, receiving her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Fine Art. She is now on the faculty at Syracuse and lectures and exhibits her artwork regionally and nationally.
A gifted pastelist, Gangi draws inspirations from things encountered in her daily life. The skillful arrangement of these everyday objects such as spoons, slices of fresh fruit, polished silver cups, cut flowers and more are completed with the utmost attention to detail. In fact, creating the precise tableau is just as important as the actual rendering of the pastel.
Color is an essential element in Gangi's work; she has mastered the use of subtractive color, value, and contrast in an understated, yet undeniable fashion, effectively capturing the viewer and making them an active participant in the reflected scene. Of her work Gangi asserts, "As a narrative artist I make use of contrasts, like the ones which exist in our daily lives." This focus on those things we all experience mixed with Gangi's rich, layered use of color tap into our senses giving her pastels the ability to evoke a visceral response - gazing at a Gangi still life with a highly-polished silver teapot in front of which sits a lone slice of lime, one feels as if they can almost taste the zest of the lime sheer, the clear droplets of water still shimmering on its edges.
Veronica Battersby Clark was born in Sussex, England. Educated in London, Paris and Florence, Clark was surrounded by museums and galleries featuring the finest examples of Western European art traditions. Clark moved to the Carolinas in 1981. Although she had always enjoyed drawing the animals she had loved since her childhood in rural England, Clark did not begin to seriously study art until 1998.
Since then, Clark has studied with several well-known artists including: Carol Mitchell, Ben Long, Kate Worm, George Strickland and Scott Burdick. She has also attended the American Academy of the Equine Art, Lexington, KY.
Working in a variety of media including: pastel, charcoal, conte and oil, Clark specializes in animal paintings and drawings. An avid plein-air artist, Clark maintains this method of working in the moment, on site, is key to capture the ever-changing sights, sounds and "feel" of natural elements.
Clark has received special recognition for her expressive animal portraiture. Commenting on her ability to capture the spirit of her subjects Clark states, "I spend most of my time on the eyes because it gives so many clues to personality of the animal."
