September Issue 2006
Spartanburg County Museum of Art in Spartanburg, SC, Features New Exhibits
The Spartanburg County
Museum of Art in Spartanburg, SC, is pleased to announce three
new shows opening in September including: James Frank Collins:
Artist & Architect, on view in the Parsons Gallery from
Sept. 5 through Oct. 22, 2006; Magic Wheels: Art in Motion,
will feature the photographs of James (Magic) Wilson in the Milliken
Gallery from Sept. 11 through Oct. 29, 2006; and Recent Paintings
from Up the Hill, featuring works by Lenore Barnett, a resident
of Hendersonville, NC, in the Burwell Gallery from Sept. 11 through
Oct. 22, 2006.
An architect of high repute, James Frank Collins (1883 - 1969)
designed many well-known buildings in Spartanburg including The
Masonic Temple, The Coca-Cola Bottling Company, and Southside
Elementary School, current home to The Spartanburg Museum of Art.
Collins also designed numerous private residences for prominent
citizens in Spartanburg. Adding to his legacy as an architect,
Collins was a painter, sculptor, ceramicist, and woodworker. He
was a charter member of The Spartanburg Rotary Club, The Artists'
Guild of Spartanburg, and The Spartanburg Gun Club. The Museum
of Art is producing a catalog about Collins life, designs and
artwork to accompany this exhibit.
James Wilson, a native of South Carolina, is a nationally published photographer who is also a motorcycle enthusiast. Wilson purchased his first motorcycle in 1974 and since then has ridden in 49 of the United States, 4 Canadian provinces, 5 Mexican states and a total of more than 250,000 miles on 7 motorcycles. The photographs in this exhibition highlight the artwork often found on custom motorcycles. Wilson's photography however is more than a documentary of these "moving canvases". Art in their own right, his work finds the beauty of functional forms taken from the context of every day life.
Lenore Barnett is a national award-winning artist whose work embodies a quiet, heartfelt realism that draws the viewer into her world. She is a signature member of the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society. She is also an accomplished color pencil artist. Barnett's artwork of beautiful landscapes and mountain scenes will be present in this exhibition.
