Sumter County Gallery of Art in Sumter, SC, Offers Corporate Collection
The local branch office of A. G. Edwards & Sons, Inc., in Sumter, SC, is sponsoring an exhibition of prints, posters and photographs from the St. Louis-based financial services company's corporate art collection. The exhibit, A.G. Edwards: American Spirit, opens on Sept. 21 and continues through Nov. 11, 2006.
The collection of 50
works created during the 19th and 20th centuries depicts patriotic
scenes, images and symbols, as well as works that embody the general,
but instantly recognizable notion of the more admirable qualities
of "American spirit"; hard work, love of country and
family, and concern for the less fortunate.
The collection comprises works by some of the giants of American
art including Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol,
Vito Acconci, Lee Friedlander, and Alfred Stieglitz. The collection
also includes many of the James Montgomery Flagg War Bonds posters.
The Statue of Liberty is a favorite subject, represented in Lichtenstein's
distinctive screen print, Rauschenberg's lithograph, and Peter
Kaplan's photograph. Warhol's colorful quartet of John F. Kennedy
portraits is also a high point.
The A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc. Corporate Art Collection was created in 1967, and contains more than 4,000 works by noted American and European artists. Several different types of artwork are represented in the collection, including lithographs, engravings, woodcuts, serigraphs, gelatin silver and platinum prints, as well as mixed media. In 1991, the firm created the traveling exhibit program, encouraging branch offices to partner with local art institutions to bring selections of the corporate collection to their communities. Since the program's inception, A.G. Edwards' branches have collaborated with more than fifty institutions across the country to sponsor various exhibitions.
The effort to bring this show to Sumter began in 2005. Karen Watson, Director of the Sumter County Gallery of Art worked closely with Shelley Hagen, Curator of the collection in St. Louis, and Mark Mcleod, Artistic Director/Curator at the Sumter County Gallery of Art. Watson believes this show will have strong appeal not only to people who want to view important art, but also to the state's large population of active and retired military personnel. Jack Griffith, the branch manager of the Sumter A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. office was instrumental in bringing this show to Sumter - it could not have happened without his commitment - and saw this as a way to give back to the community.
