Art League of Hilton Head on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Fran Hubbell and Donna Ireton
Though Fran Hubbell and Donna Ireton have named their upcoming show at the Art League Gallery of Hilton Head A Natural Perspective, the show is an incredible blend of nature and doing what comes naturally (to them). The exhibit opens on Sept. 11 and continues through Oct. 6, 2007, at the Gallery in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island, SC.
Fran Hubbell
Hubbell is an outstanding photographer who travels widely to select the subject matter for her work. From Alaska to the Canadian Rockies and Botswana, South Africa, her vivid and touching images focus on the fragile beauty of nature and the need to preserve the wilderness parts of our planet. She calls photography her second career. It is a career that has taken her around the world and has placed her outstanding photographs in private collections in the US and abroad. Hubbell says, "My lifelong love of art in its many forms has led me to a concentration in photography. I find the process of composing images, refining them in the computer darkroom and finally printing them to be immensely creative and satisfying."
Hubbell has won numerous awards at the Camera Club of Hilton Head's competitions, and has had her photographs published in the Island Packet, Hilton Head Monthly, the Beaufort Gazette, Low Country Weekly and Close Up Expedition's brochures. Whether her subject is two of Alaska's white bears in a photo called First Snow Flurries, or a close-up shot of a rose, the photos are outstanding in their composition and understanding of nature.
Donna Ireton
Donna Ireton was introduced to her art while living in California. There she fell in love with Southwestern contemporary art, especially artists' fantastic creations on gourds. She began doing artwork on gourds and often used pine needles as a decorative element on many of her gourds. Largely self-taught through a book she found on pine needle basketry, she started making pine needle baskets when she moved to Hilton Head Island in 2003. The island has an abundance of pine trees and huge volumes of pine needles for her art.
Recently, Ireton began using found driftwood originating in California or on Hilton Head in making pine needle baskets and sculptures. This has evolved as a signature approach; all of her creations now include driftwood. The titles of her works evoke the beauty of the natural materials she uses in her work. Baskets with descriptive names like Simplicity, Trails through the Redwoods, and Moonlight Walk, more than tell the story.
The Art League of Hilton Head promotes and supports the visual arts through education, exhibitions and partnerships for the cultural enrichment of the community and its visitors. It is a not-for-profit 501 © 3 organization. The Art League holds classes at the Art League Academy on Cordillo Parkway, and sponsors workshops with nationally renowned art instructors. These week-long intensive classes are held at the Disney Studio on the third floor of the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. Art exhibitions at the Gallery in Pineland Station are changed monthly and the work of over 100 member artists are displayed and available for sale at all times.
