Beaufort Art Association in Beaufort, SC, Offers Works by Hetty P. Nijman
Hetty P. Nijman, featured artist and longtime member of the Beaufort Art Association, will present Hetty's World, a collection of new work in a variety of media and techniques. The exhibit opens Sept. 18 and runs through Oct. 27, 2007. New works by members of the BAA Gallery will be on display as well. The gallery is located in the historic Elliott House in Beaufort, SC.
Born in the Netherlands, Nijman emigrated to Canada where she married and raised two daughters while she was studying art on a part-time basis. When the family moved to the US, she was able to return to school full time. Nijman earned a BA in Art from Northern Illinois University. Over the years she has studied with numerous artists such as Jonathan Talbot, Judy Betz and Mary Whyte, to name a few.
Nijman said that preparing for the show was "good for me as an artist, as it put on a little pressure - made me focus and think. Like many other artists, I cannot help but be influenced by what I see around me," and in wanting to create work relating to "somewhat of a theme" for this exhibit, she has chosen to concentrate on just three elements: the horizontal sweeps of water, land and sky.
"With these as my starting point, I wanted to see what I could do with such basic compositional elements," adds Nijman. The works slowly evolved and "took on lives of their own in many variations on the theme. The basic fields were still there but the canvasses looking back at me showed sculpted land masses, roiling skies, geometric skyscapes, colorful cityscapes, abstracts, triptychs, and even quilts!"
Prior to the work for this exhibit, Nijman
created Spectra, a brilliant mermaid and part of The
Big Swim, this year's fundraising project sponsored by the
Arts Council of Beaufort County. Bejeweled, with paint brush in
hand, Spectra has swum on the gallery's porch since early summer
and will be auctioned off. Nijman noted that the artist's color
wheel inspired her, and J.W. Rone, Executive Director of ACBC,
said "Spectra is beautiful with many colors - she
looks like a box of crayons."
