Gallery in Wilmington, NC, will present the exhibit Doggone
Fine Art, featuring works by Hilda Spain-Owen, on view from
Sept. 22 - 30, 2007.
When artist Hilda Spain-Owen meets her portrait subject, it is a tail-wagging experience. Her rapport with the subject is immediate and her interest intense. In her paintings, the subject fills as much of the canvas as possible and the background is left abstract, further pushing the center of interest forward. For her, bold sizes, bright colors and unique texture are all part of expressing the personality of the sitter. Spain-Owen paints dogs, wonderful, playful, loving and loyal in all their aspects. Being the owner of whippets, a champion of sighthound rescue and a lifetime canine lover has inspired her life and her art.
Early on, working toward what pleased her contemporary taste, Spain-Owen arrived at her distinctive style. Using her own pets as subjects, she grasped the importance of painting what you love. It was through portraying these small, graceful hounds that the exploration of line, color and texture gave expression to her growing passion for creating. Since then, Spain-Owen has painted numerous portrait commissions of dogs belonging to others. Fans of her work agree that the appeal of her art goes beyond the boundaries of the subject.
Spain-Owen's work has been shown in galleries in Florida, North Carolina, Alabama and New York and hangs in collections across the country. She has also garnered awards in juried shows and been featured in several publications. The artist encourages prospective clients to meet her at the gallery and bring photos of their pets.
