Collectors Sharing Collections, offers a rare opportunity for art enthusiasts and
collectors to view, and to purchase, works that have been unavailable
for some time, as they have been, until now, privately held. The
approximately 60 pieces, both large and small, will include works
from such artists as Sol LeWitt, Peter Agostini, Robert Broderson,
Robert Mangold, Maud Gatewood, Kathe Kollwitz, Yasuo Kuniyoshi,
Robbie Tillotson, Lucy Spencer, John Maggio, Miriam Schapiro,
Martha Dunigan and Stanton Macdonald-Wright.

In 2002, Lynn and David Gibbs, owners of the
THE DESIGN GROUP, bought and gutted a large building at 115 Pomona
Drive in Greensboro. The goal of refurbishing the building
was to create an inviting business space, as well as a comfortable
and conducive work environment. Curving walls in soft grays with
almost no sharp angles combined with natural light from overhead
skylights create a flowing interior.
But there was another goal in mind when the plans were drawn for
renovation, and that was to provide space for an art gallery.
It seemed a natural fit for a design firm to house an art gallery.
The Gibbs wanted to create a work environment in which they themselves,
as well as their staff and clients, could be surrounded by art
and inspired by multiple sensibilities, the combining of design
with craft and art. Art professionals were consulted to make certain
the hallways were constructed with sufficient width to offer viewers
the opportunity to step back and fully view the artwork hung within
the gallery. Museum quality lighting was installed to shed sufficient
yet safe light on the works of art on display.
THE DESIGN GROUP, which was started in 1968, opened the inaugural
show of Gallery 115 in Dec. of 2004. Since then, the reputation
of the gallery has steadily grown within the immediate community
and beyond. The gallery has a commitment to artists to be
a serious and professional venue, and to art enthusiasts and collectors
to be a destination providing visual stimulation and an opportunity
to purchase artwork by leading regional, as well as national artists.
Gallery 115 now has a full-time director, mounts three changing
exhibitions per year, and in addition, represents a number of
artists in the gallery on a year round basis. Gallery artists
include Setsuya Kotani, Tom Suómalainen, Esteban Chavez,
Janet Oliver, Larry Earley, Will South, Margaret Cogswell, Katie
Davis, and Jeff and Adele Wayman. The Gallery 115 calendar
includes Conversation with the Artists, for each exhibition, and
educational programming and community events.
There are also offerings in the gallery shop@115, a unique and
growing retail space that is a continuation of the Gallery 115
experience. The gallery shop@115 features finely crafted,
passionately realized art jewelry exclusive to this area, and
imaginatively designed home accoutrements from nationally recognized
artists and designers.
