Gallery C in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Joseph Cave
Gallery C in Raleigh, NC, will present the exhibit Southern Landscapes, featuring works by Joseph Cave will be on view from Sept. 7 through Oct. 9, 2007.
The exhibit features paintings of familiar rural farm settings reminiscent, to native North Carolinians, of the nostalgic scenes of childhood. From the tobacco barns and cotton fields of the Piedmont to shrimp boats on the inlets of the South Carolina coast, Cave has traveled extensively to find and paint scenes that are less and less a part of our daily surroundings.
Traveling to find such subjects is nothing new for this artist. Although born and raised in South Carolina, Cave lived in California and in Europe for many years before returning to the South in 1989. He brings a wide array of experiences to his depictions of the Southern landscape whether they come from painting the cliffs of the Pacific Coast or the stone walls and olive orchards of Portugal.
There is an immediacy and movement in Cave's paintings that always seems to include the observer. Broad brushstrokes and intense color are combined in every painting to bring his subjects to life. Cave originally trained in the early 60's as an abstract expressionist at the University of Georgia and the San Francisco Art Institute. That influence is still present in his work, even after over 40 years of painting the world around him.
Paintings by the artist can be found in many distinguished collections including those of The North Carolina Museum of Art, Duke University Medical Center, SAS Institute, Senator John Edwards, and Central Carolina Bank. Cave's paintings have been shown at Gallery C in Raleigh since 1994.
