NC, Presents Photography Exhibition
The Gregg Museum at NC State University in Raleigh, NC, is pleased
to present the inaugural exhibition of SPoT 2007- The Southeastern
Photography Triennial, on view through Oct. 7, 2007. The exhibit
was juried this year by Joyce Tenneson. A companion exhibit, Juror's
Work: Photographs by Joyce Tenneson, will also be on view.
SPoT seeks to recognize outstanding work done by photographers in the Southeastern United States and to enhance the historic photography collection of the Gregg Museum of Art & Design with the work of contemporary artists. The Gregg, NC State University's art museum, houses one of the largest and strongest collections of photography in the region, with work representing the major figures in the history of photography, and special strengths in photographers from North Carolina and the southeast. Thirty-nine photographers were chosen from over 170 who sent entries from Virginia to Florida.
Awards will be presented to the following photographers: Best in Show went to Michael Traister, of Asheville, NC; Second Place (tie): went to Mike Hammer, of Charlotte, NC, and to Snow Ray Donmoyer, of Olanta, SC; Honorable Mentions were given to Cheryl Gottschall, of Raleigh, NC, Sarah Martin, of Jamestown, NC, Laura Noel, of Atlanta, GA, Linda Foard Roberts, of Waxhaw, NC, and Laura Walker, of Chattanooga, TN.
The chosen entries from these and thirty-one others will be on display in the Foundations Gallery of the Gregg Museum. In the adjacent Cannon Gallery Juror's Work, a small exhibition of the work of Joyce Tenneson, will be on view. Tenneson is a world-renowned fine art photographer and portraitist whose work has appeared in over 150 exhibitions and in 10 books, including Intimacy - the Sensual Essence of Flowers, which was published by Barnes & Noble in 2004. Named Photographer of the Year in 1990 by the international organization Women in Photography, Tenneson's name was also included on a list of the ten most influential women photographers in the history of photography according to a recent poll conducted by American Photo magazine.
A gallery talk with Tenneson, sponsored by Canon, will take place on Sept. 12, 2007, at which time the awards will also be presented.
