Metropolitan Arts Council in Greenville, SC, Offers Exhibition of Wall Murals
Seven Greenville-area artists are participating in 7 X 7, an exhibit at the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) Gallery in Greenville, SC, on view through Sept. 28, 2007. Paul Flint, Axel Forrester, Todd McDonald, Alexia Timberlake, J.P. Tousignant, Enid Williams and Paul Yanko took seven hours to paint 7' x 7' murals directly on the gallery walls at MAC.
Spearheaded by Enid Williams, a visual artist and Assistant Professor/Gallery Director at Greenville Technical College, 7 X 7 is based on the idea that creating art is a useful, stimulating and instructive process. The goal of the exhibit is to focus on this process and emphasize the importance of visual dialogue between artists. Since the artists apply their media directly to the walls which are painted over when the show closes, the impermanence of the exhibit gives it a non-commercial air.
"Exhibits like this have been very successful in other cities, and the seven artists are very glad to have this show in a high-traffic space area like the MAC gallery," Williams commented. "We hope that this will evolve into an annual event with seven different artists each year. One of the purposes of 7 X 7 is to encourage camaraderie among artists, giving them an opportunity to collaborate. When artists create stimulating challenges for themselves, they provide a diversity of perspectives for the arts community, for arts students and for the general public."
"The quality of the work of these seven painters is astounding," said MAC executive director Alan Ethridge. "It is fascinating to see seven different artistic styles emerge into a cohesive, large-scale exhibit that reflects the individuality of the artists. The fact that the artists have had to work within a seven-hour time limit adds a unique element of surprise."
"The seven artists featured are also teaching artists, and they plan to involve their students in the process of 7 X 7. It is an integral part of arts education to demonstrate artistic processes as well as to provide a forum for collaboration to show different artistic perspectives," added Ethridge.
In conjunction with the exhibit, there will
be an artist talk on Sept. 19 at 7pm at the MAC gallery. Each
artist will discuss his/her work and reveal sources of creative
inspiration.
