Red Clover Gallery in Landrum, SC, Offers Works by Linda Hudgins
The Red Clover Gallery in Landrum, SC, is featuring the work of Linda Hudgins in an exhibit titled The Grateful Eye, on view from Sept. 14 through Oct. 17, 2007.
Hudgins works in acrylics, oils and mixed media, reacting to her inner questions in an expressive manner. While some might call her work abstract or non-objective one can often find suggestive imagery, as she states, "like that seen when watching cloud formations."
Why the title? Hudgins finds the homophones "eye", "aye" and "I" all relevant. She informs these words by signifying that the eye is the necessary ingredient for visual art, vision being active even with closed eyes where one can see images and color moving in random shapes. "Aye" is saying yes to painting and the ideas that come through discovery and attention to the process. "I", is because she knows that her artwork is an expression of her unique self.
Hudgins is grateful for the diverse aspects of her life as an artist: Grateful for her eyes that appreciate color and juxtaposition of blendings and textures; grateful for her studio and being free to make discoveries in her paintings; grateful for her perception of her changing surroundings, day to day, year to year, the cycles of observation and understanding.
A native South Carolinian, Hudgins pursued an education in art, first at Converse College under August Cook, and later, after teaching art for a few years, a masters degree from Rhode Island School of Design. One important summer was spent in a studio and critique class at New York University where artist/instructor James Biederman told her to "just paint".
After her husband died unexpectedly Hudgins left the comfort of teaching art at a local college prep school to go into the Peace Corps. She taught art in Botswana for three years before challenging herself to go on her own to the People's Republic of China where she taught art and English for another three years. Hudgins has now returned to her roots, living in Tryon, NC, and inspired, like many before her, to go to her studio and "just paint".
