Kim Richards, SCWS Executive Director said,
"SCWS is the only statewide visual arts organization in SC,
which may sound simple enough but the state has seen a few organizations
come and go. SCWS has not only survived for 30 years but also
thrived because it has been more than one exhibition per year."
In addition to its annual juried exhibition, which is a large
production, they also present educational programs such as the
annual Regional Gatherings, workshops and other exhibits and art
events that are coordinated in cooperation with private businesses
and public art facilities. The public has enjoyed and supported
the SCWS events with more than 26,000 participants last year.
They don't have a facility of their own so they have learned to
work successfully with others. Each year, the annual exhibition
is presented in a different SC city so it's not just the same
old format but it evolves around the unique offerings and opportunities
of its host community.

Recently, SCWS made a slight name change from using the word watercolor to watermedia, which more accurately reflects the organization and its members. Though the wording change may seem minimal, it reaches out to a broader group of artists. For more than 20 years, SCWS has accepted acrylics into the annual exhibition and most recently, they dropped the surface requirement, which historically has linked watercolor to paper. Yet many artists, museum directors and the public do not connect the organization with anything but watercolor. Yes, they represent watercolor and they embrace that rich history but they are also representing artists who paint in acrylic and other water based mediums with mixed media on various surfaces.
