Spencer Art Gallery II in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Jan Sasser
Spencer Art Gallery II in downtown Charleston, SC, is offering: A Natural Perspective, a series of striking "nature portraits" by Jan Sasser. The exhibition of new and recent oil paintings will be on display from Sept. 28 through Oct. 5, 2007.
In a city often associated with charming painterly and impressionistic street scenes, Sasser focuses on the vanishing landscapes of America, from the marshes and swamps of the lowcountry, Gulf coast beaches, and Carolina mountains, to the snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada Range. Her reverence for nature is expressed in patiently layered, vividly real, and richly detailed canvases.
Dually trained in both social work and art,
Sasser spent much of her career in human service roles. Her work
with clients reinforced her belief in the capacity of nature and
to soothe and restore the human spirit. Her paintings invite viewers
to emerge from workday pressures, turn off their cell phones,
iPods, and "virtual reality" toys and rediscover the
beauty and value of the world around them.
Sasser returned to painting in 2003. Her first entry in a juried
show in 2004 sparked gallery interest. Since, she has become an
exhibiting member of the Charleston Artist Guild, taken ribbons
in several juried shows in the area, and been accepted as a participating
artist in Charleston's yearly Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibit.
Her works hang in hospitals, offices, and private collections
in a dozen states.
