September Issue 2008

Celebrate Heritage in Great Falls, SC, on Sept. 26 & 27, 2008

The Great Falls Heritage Celebration, held annually in September will extend over a two day period this year. The event, which focuses on the cultural heritage of this small, picturesque community situated on the banks of the Catawba River, will be held Sept. 26 & 27, 2008.

The event focuses on and celebrates the heritage of the Great Falls area - its rich history, abundant natural resources, and culture. Saturday's activities are indoors & outdoors from 10am - 4pm at the War Memorial Building, 401 Dearborn Street, Great Falls, and include music, food, artist exhibits, reptile & animal exhibits, children's activities, storytelling, & displays of area information.

Avant Garde Center for the Arts has partnered with Arts Council of Chester County & Great Falls Home Town Association to begin this years' celebration on Friday evening with a "total arts fusion" from 7-10pm at the War Memorial Building. Music & theater performances will entertain guests throughout the evening as they enjoy culinary & wine tastings, book signing, and folk & fine arts exhibits. A silent auction will benefit the Great Falls Home Town Association as the event unfolds to introduce and "reintroduce" the cultural heritage of this picturesque community located on the banks of the Catawba River.

Playwright Terry Roueche will present two plays performed by Rock Hill's Main Street Theater between musical performances by The Magnolia Trio, a Matthews-based group featuring bassoon, oboe, & flute and The Maplewood Bluegrass Band with members that hail from throughout the region. Culinary artists are preparing their finest dishes to represent them in the food tasting while guests are invited to sample wines & other beverages. Nature Photographer Bill Price will sign copies of his books to sell for benefit of Palmetto Conservation & Katawba Valley Land Trust. Art exhibits to celebrate artists from around the state with a wide array of folk & fine art will include sculpture, pottery, wood carving, paintings, drawings, photography & prints.

A few of the featured artists include Fort Mill's Raymond Overman & Rick Bischoff, Van Wyck's Robin Y. Zavada & David Helwer, Fort Lawn's Jon Matheson, York's Jane Spratt, Catawba Nation's Margaret Robbins, Camden's Ray Douglas, Taxahaw's Bill Price, Rock Hill's Jon Roueche & Terry Roueche, Buford's Betsy Craig & Wayne Beckham, Greensboro's Barbara Quatrone, Great Falls' Raymond Gladden & Jayson Jones, and Lancaster's Bob Doster & Savannah Cudd. The silent auction will have artwork from exhibiting & other artists, theme parties, golf & fitness packages, local business services, bountiful baskets, and much more!

Both days events are open and free to the public and BBQ will be available for purchase during lunchtime on Saturday.
