University of South Carolina in Columbia,
SC, Features Works by Christian Thee
The University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, is presenting the exhibition, Behind the Curtain, featuring scenic designs and maquettes by South Carolina artist Christian Thee, on view in the McMaster Gallery through Oct. 2, 2008.
The exhibition explores the symbiotic relationship between theatre and the visual arts through scenic design. More than a dozen of Thee's dramatic creations will provide a glimpse into the behind the scenes effort that must take place to create the magic of theatre.
Thee is a leading practitioner of trompe l'oeil, a French term, which literally translated means to fool the eye. A Columbia native, Thee became interested in set design as a teenager. After graduating from the University of South Carolina, and post-graduate work at Columbia University, Thee settled in New York to work as a scenic artist for top-billed plays and operas. His creations have been seen from Broadway to London.
