20/20 Vision: Views from the Edge of the Century Showing in Anderson, SC
The Anderson County Arts Center will host the first showing of 20/20 Vision: Views from the Edge of the Century featuring works from the "Members with Excellence" of the SC Water Color Society (SCWS) and the Governor's School for the Arts. The exhibit is a unique presentation of professional artists from the 20th Century and the youth who will usher in the 21st Century.
In conjunction with the SC Arts Commission project to celebrate the year 2000, SCWS has joined with the Anderson County Arts Center (ACAC) and the SC Governor's School for the Arts to mount a special exhibit and educational program. The exhibit will be on display at ACAC through Oct. 28. The exhibit is a visual representation of watercolor technique and potential ranging from pure traditional transparency to experimental in form and content. The approximately 60 works in a variety of media include a full spectrum from traditional to experimental, from realism to conceptual.
Two "Members with Excellence," Joanne Anderson of Belton and Carrie Burns Brown of Greenville, were chosen to teach at the Governor's School for the Arts during the summer of 1999.
The SCWS work in the exhibit was juried by Glenn R. Bradshaw. Only SCWS "Members with Excellence" were eligible to submit their work for consideration. No awards were given. Twenty artists were selected with two paintings each.
Bradshaw has a BS from Illinois State Normal University (1947) and a MFA from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1950). He is a member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, National Academy, and National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic. He has juried most of the major watermedia shows including American Watercolor Society and National Water Color Society. In commenting on his approach to being a juror, Bradshaw writes: ".... while I work in an abstract mode, my judgement is based upon the quality of the paintings that I see rather than on any specific style A good painting is a good painting whether is transparent or opaque, realistic or abstract, painted with a stick or a fine brush, large or small, and traditional or experimental."
The Governor's School selected the work for their portion of the exhibit and it includes work from students from all over the state.
A traveling exhibit will include stops in: Rock Hill Center
for the Arts, Marion County Museum, Burroughs-Chapin Art Museum
(Myrtle Beach), and Bowie Art Center (Erskine College, Due West).
