- David W. Ball Fine Art Photography in Greenville, SC, is
exhibiting a collection of fine art photography entitled Flora
Photographica featuring works by Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932)
and others through Aug. 31, 1999. The exhibit will showcase
Karl Blossfeldt, a German photographer and professor of metal
sculpture, whose career spanned over 30 years until his death
in 1932.
"Blossfeldt's photography began as a way of capturing original
forms in nature for his students to incorporate into their metal
sculpture," said David W. Ball. "His work contains
magnified images of plants, flowers, leaves, stems and buds,
which show almost microscopic detail of their internal structure."
"Blossfelt has been a major influence on other photographers
and artists. Today, more than half a century later, his work
retains its startlingly fresh, modernist vision."
On display is a large collection of photogravures from Blossfeldt's
landmark series Urformen der Kunst (Art Forms in Nature).
Photogravure is an early photographic process in which an etching
is made from the negative. "The process results in a very
fine print, but it is also laborious and rarely seen today,"
said Ball.
"In recent years, Blossfeldt's work has become increasingly
popular," Ball continued. "His original prints of silver
gelatin now command prices in the $90,000 range. For the present,
the photogravures are still highly affordable for collectors
at $125 - $250 apiece."
The exhibit also features prints by photographers Howard Bond,
Frank Hunter, Wes Walker, Ray Laub, and Huntington Witherill.
David W. Ball Fine Art Photography is a private dealership, located
at 1123 Wembley Road, in Greenville, that hosts periodic exhibits
and manages consignments for established and emerging artists.
