Works by Henri Matisse at Bank of America Gallery in Charlotte

Primarily known for his richly colored paintings, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) began experimenting with printmaking as early as 1903. In the 1930's, Matisse's work as a printmaker was primarily devoted to the illustration of books. The exhibition Henri Matisse and the Illustrated Book, on display Nov. 2 through Jan.23, 2000 in the Bank of America Gallery within Charlotte's Mint Museum of Craft + Design, provides a look at this aspect of his work. The free exhibit is comprised of 45 original prints created for four of the publications that the artist worked on through the later part of his career.

The artist's first illustrated book, Poésies de Stéphane Mallarmé, was published in 1932 and includes fourteen images that Matisse created to accompany the poems of the French poet Stephan Mallarmé. Poésies is characterized by the use of simple, seemingly effortless lines. Pasiephaé - Chant de Minos (Les Crétois), published in 1944, consists of linoleum cuts in which the image is a white line on a solid black background.

Ten images from Jazz show a bold use of color and a diversity of materials. Completed during the end of the Second World War, but not published until 1947, the prints were composed of cutout shapes of painted paper. In this unique endeavor, 1943 and published in 1950, Poemès de Charles d'Orléans features colorful images to accompany the text of the 15th century French poet Charles d'Orléans.

The prints on display Henri Matisse and the Illustrated Book are from the Bank of America's art collection comprised of works representing many media and regional, national, and international artists. It reflects the diversity and creativity found within the Bank of America franchise.
