November Issue 1999
Works by Lynn Brown at Beaufort Library, Beaufort, SC
Beaufort Art Association member Lynn Brown
will be the featured artist at Art Among the Books Gallery on
the second floor of the Beaufort County Library in downtown Beaufort,
SC, from Nov. 4 through Dec. 14.
A new interest in monotypes and monoprints has proven to be the
perfect medium for expressing her long time interest in myths
and story-telling. Brown states, "Legends and myths are a
fascinating view into the heart and soul of a people. There are
myths from all parts of the world and interestingly there is often
a connecting theme or similarity. In some cases it is thought
that they are responses to universal cataclysmic events. In other
cases stories have been carried by transplanted or invading peoples
to be encorporated into a collective memory. Some tell of the
mysteries of the sun and stars, of birds and animals, and of the
creation of the world and ultimately of man."
Brown has been making art for as long as she can remember, working
in all media. Before moving to Beaufort from New England she most
recently had been producing one-of-a-kind fiber sculpture for
galleries and store windows as well as doing production work.
Brown's earlier work, oil paintings and mixed media, have been
exhibited throughout New England. Through the New Hampshire League
of Craftsmen, her fiber sculptures have been collected throughout
the US. In 1995 her work was selected for Masterworks, An Exhibition
of Outstanding Contemporary and Historical Objects by Regional
Craftsmen, at the Currier Gallery of Art, Manchester, NH.
Brown graduated from the Connecticut College for Women, took graduate
courses at the Rhode Island School of Design and studied at the
DeCordova Museum School.
