- The Blue Pony Gallery and Press in Charlotte, NC, is featuring
a one-person show of new paintings entitled, Figure and Ground,
by Charlotte Foust, which will be on view through June 12, 1999.
The exhibit will feature contemporary mixed media figurative
paintings on canvas and paper.
Throughout history, the human figure has been depicted as the
subject matter of many paintings and used by artists to reflect
not only the physical body but to also mirror humanity. The paintings
in the exhibit, Figure and Ground, do not attempt to recreate
the physical body. Instead, through the use of gestural brushstrokes
and expressive lines, this work explores the psychological realm
of existence.
Foust says of her work, "without deliberately planning out
the paintings, or working intuitively, the figures have a sense
of directness and immediacy. After repeated layering and removal
of material on the flat surface of the canvas, a human form emerges
from the abstract void. The clear outline of a face or the curve
of an arm only suggest a solid form is actually present. The
figures are left in varying stages of metamorphosis, which suggest
the fleeting passage of time and memory. Through the painting
process, I am continually exploring the internal and external
components of the human form, and in this current work the standards
of appearance have become fragmented and ultimately start to
fall away."
Foust believes that with her work, the outcome of association
or any definition to be found in her paintings is one of a sense
of connection with the viewer.
