Charleston City Gallery Offers Works by Anna Keck

A weaving exhibition entitled, Shredded Paintings Make Inspired Weavings, by Charleston artist Anna Keck will be on exhibit at the City Gallery in Charleston, SC, through November 30.

Keck's quirky, irksome and deeply personal process provides illuminating effects. First, she paints a memory, depicting as much detail as the faculty of remembrance coupled with design will allow on cotton duck canvas, then she shreds it up. Thin strips are sheared horizontally to the image and parallel to the tooth of the canvas. Keck then discards every other strip or half the painting. The remaining strips become a strong weft and the rest of this intricate web is made up from linen yarn, which she has dyed to achieve a sensitive color interaction. The painting woven into the regular highly chromatic filament, called the warp, diffuses the image, indeed makes it feel subliminal. The mediaeval art of tapestry making is evoked, only this time it has superseded the easel painting to make a brilliant concoction of Keck's inner romantic nature.

Of her work Keck says, " Many of my weavings reflect moments that have a special significance, or influence in my life, whether it be a place, an object, a person, or a feeling. By honoring my memories in this way, I have permanently 'written' in my history, a moment that makes me the person that I have become. I want to express, and share the special or intense feelings I have when I think of certain moments in time. Weaving is a very time consuming process, I use this time ritualistically to develop my art. I create a temporary state of escape, from which I choose positive memories to reflect upon . We waste enough of our mind's energy dwelling on negative aspects. I want to invite the viewer into my positive connections".

Keck graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in Fiber Art in 1991. She was an Artist in Residence at the Arrowmont School of Art and Craft in Tennessee in 1994 and currently teaches at the Gibbes Museum Art Studios. Keck looks forward to this return solo show at the City Gallery, which will travel next year to Berea, KY, followed by a joint show at the Association for Visual Artists in Tennessee.
