College of Charleston's Halsey Gallery Hosts New York Artist David Stern
The William Halsey Gallery at the
College of Charleston's School of the Arts, in Charleston, SC,
is hosting an exhibition of recent works by NY artists David Stern.
The exhibition consists of a group of oil paintings downstairs
and a collaboration between Stern and Maryland poet Warren Wigutow
upstairs.
Stern has dedicated himself to the task of exploiting the special
abilities of oil paint to render tangible, yet elusive aspects
of humanity. A native of Germany, the artist moved to NY from
Cologne four years ago. His paintings hover between abstraction
and figuration and are heavily impastoed. Lance Epslund, in Modern
Painters magazine states "David Stern... seems deeply
rooted in Giacometti... In Stern, one is always overtly aware
of the paint and all its magical and physical characteristics...
and although Stern, with an exquisite hand, can make it feel light
or airy, you never lose the fact of the paint."
Stern's paintings and drawings have been exhibited in Germany,
Austria, England, Hungary and the US, most recently at the Rosenberg
+ Kaufman Gallery Fine Art in NY, Galerie Brennecke in Berlin,
and the National Jewish Museum in Washington, DC.
On Jan. 1, 1999, Stern (in NY) and Wigutow (in MD) set about
describing/defining themselves each morning for the next twenty-one
days. Taking off the three Saturdays that fell within their project
cycle to observe the Sabbath, their project concluded on Jan.
21, 1999. The resulting eighteen poems/drawings will on view under
the title About /Face.
Wigutow is a poet, musician, editor, ethnomusicologist, and rare
book specialist. His writings have appeared in Notus, Creedence,
and Equisite Corpse.
