Pop Luxe at Halsey Gallery

The William Halsey Gallery in the College of Charleston's School of the Arts is hosting an exhibition: Pop Luxe: The Language of the Garment, featuring artists - Regina Frank, Christine LoFaso, Jessica Larson, Gene Pool, and Martha Posner - whose works explore the way in which clothing and words are used to construct individual and cultural identity. The exhibition continues through June 12.

Pop Luxe: The Language of the Garment is co-curated by Mark Sloan, Director of the Halsey Gallery and Alison E. Collins, Adjunct Professor of Sculpture at the College.

Frank's work incorporates the use of text, texture, and textile in combination with the Internet. One of her installations The Glass Bead Game, will be shown in the Halsey Gallery, while another, Hermes' Mistress, will be on view in the Custom House at the corner of East Bay Street and the Market. Frank is on the faculty at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Chicago-based artist LoFaso works with issues of femininity and commercialization. She will create a site-specific installation in the Halsey Gallery. Larson, of Minnesota, fashions 50's style girdles out of carefully hand-sewn embroidery. Brooklyn, NY artist Pool has modified numerous suits and other garments with everyday items such as living grass, wine corks, broken light bulbs, and aluminum cans. He has a satellite location at RTW, Ltd., 186 King Street. Posner, from Pennsylvania, considers the stages of life and creates garments which are thick in symbolism and a search for spirituality.

The primary objective of the Pop Luxe exhibition is to create an occasion for a dialogue about the fertile intersection of fashion, the body, information, public vs. private selves, ornament, luxury, and language.
