Block Prints & Students Works on Exhibit in Durham Arts Council Galleries

Block Prints For Social Change is the title of an exhibit of handmade block prints by Bynum, NC, artist, Jan Burger that will hang in the Semans Gallery of the Durham Arts Council at the Royall Center for the Arts in downtown Durham, NC, through July 27. Also students enrolled in Durham Arts Council School's day and sculpture classes will be showing their work through July 14 in the Allenton Gallery.

Most of the exhibited prints in Block Prints For Social Change were designed for protest and used as banners throughout streets or as back drops for events. It is essential that Burger's prints are active and serve the function of helping people as well as being created by reclaimed and found materials. The designs were created by cutting masonite blocks and printed by rubbing the backs with wooden spoons, then some were hand painted.

Burger works and teaches block printing, street theater and puppetry to support social change movements. His collaborations include: Bread and Puppet Theater in Clover, VT., The Boston Puppetry Cooperative, Boston, MA., Homes Not Jails and Food Not Bombs, Boston, MA., Art and Revolution San Francisco, CA., and The Haw River Festival, Bynum, NC.

The Durham Arts Council School has a strong tradition in arts education and has been promoting the work of students through exhibits for many years. The Clay and Sculpture Program is known for its talented instructors and comprehensive courses. An expansion of the DAC School's day and sculpture program is planned for later in the year.
