Two New Exhibits at Francis Marion University in Florence, SC

Reflections on Family and Faith by Stephen Nevitt and Useful Pots: Thrown and Altered Works in Clay, by Lori Leary will be on exhibit through Nov. 24 in the Hyman Fine Arts Center gallery at Francis Marion University in Florence, SC.

Nevitt has been a faculty member at Columbia College, Columbia, SC, since 1976 and is currently chairman of the Department of Art at the college. He has served on the visual arts faculty of the summer program of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities since 1985.

"Issues of family and faith have been dominant in my work for many years. Choices for this show involve a blend of older and more recent pieces which reflect these themes through use of drawing, printmaking, painting, and mixed media processes," Nevitt said. " Included are self-portraits, images of relatives, and symbols which relate to religious concerns."

Born in Charlotte, NC, he has lived most of his life in Columbia. He earned his BFA from the University of South Carolina in 1971. His works have been shown in more than 200 exhibits. He was one of 43 artists from SC whose work represented the state in Portrait of the South, an exhibit involving art from the southeastern US at the Palazzo Venezia in Rome, Italy. He was selected as one of 16 printmakers representing the state at a Southern Graphics Council Convention at Furman University, in Greenville, SC.

Nevitt has had more than 15 one-man shows, and participated in more than 25 two- or three-person shows, including exhibits at the Havens Gallery in Columbia, the McDonald Gallery in Charlotte, NC, the Sumter Gallery of Art, Sumter, SC, the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County, Camden, SC, and the Theatre Art Galleries in High Point, NC.

Nevitt has received more than 80 awards and honors; earned eight " Best in Show" awards; 12 second or third overall awards in competitive exhibitions; and more than 30 pieces of his work appear in 17 public or corporate collections. He is a frequent guest artist and speaker and conducts various workshops.

Lori Leary, a potter for eleven years, maintains a studio in Murrells Inlet, SC. A graduate of Georgia State University with a degree in nursing, Leary has studied ceramic arts at the Bethune Arts Center, North Charleston, SC; the Gibbes Museum Studio, Charleston, SC; at The Art Center in Norfolk, VA, and at the University of California-San Diego Craft Center.

Leary is currently developing and teaching a clay program for adults and children through the Georgetown County Parks and Recreation Commission. She has taught in Charleston, San Diego, and most recently at Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet. In 1998, Leary co-founded "Arts by Fire," an organization for individuals whose interests, talents, or careers are focused on art produced with the use of fire. Her work may be found in private collections and in local galleries.

"Mastery of the scientific, technical and observational skills required for the creation of works in clay is an essential element of my work, as is the appreciation of works created in the past. My art is created by combining craftsmanship, knowledge, aesthetic vision, and the often capricious nature of the process and materials, as well as by acknowledging, respecting, and building upon work that has been done by past generations," Leary said. "My intent is to create works that speak for themselves in unique, beautiful, and elegant voices."
