Picasso Exhibit to Open at Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC

The Gibbes Museum of Art is kicking off the new Millennium with one of the true giants in the history of art. From Jan. 11 through Mar. 12, 66 works by Pablo Picasso will be on view in downtown Charleston, SC. Featuring colorful clay sculptures decorated with bullfight scenes, dancers, and figures and faces of Spaniards such as Don Quixote, Picasso Ceramics from the Bernie Bercuson Collection reveals how the barrier-breaking artist was influenced by his Spanish heritage and his love for pre-Columbian pottery during the last two decades of his life.

In 1946, when he was 65 years old, Picasso became fascinated with pottery while visiting the Madoura factory in the town of Vallauris in southern France. Having delved into every other medium during his inspiring career, the controversial artist was enthusiastic about trying his hand at something new. When he worked on ceramics, Picasso placed equal emphasis on sculpting and painting. His love for clay was thorough, immediate and long lasting.

Picasso Ceramics from the Bernie Bercuson Collection consists of jugs, pots, plates and platters that show the artist's unparalleled genius at any creative level. There are also unique examples of vases, plaques, tiles, and bowls. This collection comes to Charleston from the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, FL; Bernie Bercuson, a successful hotel owner and collector, donated the pieces to the museum in 1996.

Complementing the Picasso Ceramics exhibit is a collection of 25 photographs of Picasso taken by Lucien Clergue. This comes to the Gibbes from the Baudoin Lebon Gallery in Paris. In 1953, when he was only 19, Clergue met Picasso at the Arena at Aries. As a friendship developed between the two men in the following years, Picasso opened his home, studio, and work to the photographer's lens. This collection of pictures, entitled Picasso - Mon Ami, reveals the personality of the artist, catches him in the act of creating his art, and provides the viewer with detailed glimpses into his world.
