Works by Ajay Garg & Sally Cleveland at Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte
Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is pleased to announce two solo exhibitions, Indian Miniature Paintings, by Ajay Garg and Views of Sauvie Island, by Sally Cleveland. The exhibits will open Dec. 2 and will run through Jan. 8, 2000.
Ajay Garg
Ajay Garg is a 31 year old artist specializing in Indian painting miniatures. He lives in the state of Rajasthan, India, which is famous for their miniature paintings. At the age of 3 the artist became deaf and mute after an adverse reaction to antibiotics. His paintings cover a wide sweep of subjects at different levels of narration. The artist works with a one-hair brush and a magnifying glass to render the nearly microscopic details in his paintings which are never larger than 10 x 12 inches. His works have been exhibited in India and the United Kingdom and this is only the artists third exhibition in the US.
Sally Cleveland
Sally Cleveland's show is entitled, Views of Sauvie Island. Sauvie Island is a 24,000 acre alluvial island located 12 miles northwest of Portland at the confluence of the Columbia and Williamette Rivers. The island remains one of the last major parcels of pastoral land close to Portland's urban growth. All paintings in the exhibition were painted on Sauvie Island. Sally Cleveland says, "I don't try to pretty things up, I mean I think a lot of these landscapes depict lovely spaces. But it isn't my intent to make beautiful pictures, It's my intent to record a space as I feel it". Cleveland was born in 1952 and lives in Portland, Oregon.
