Hodges Taylor Presents Works by Heriberto Mora and Preston Orr
Hodges Taylor Gallery, in Charlotte, NC, announces two new
exhibitions introducing two new artists to the Charlotte area,
Cuban artists Heriberto Mora and Savannah, GA, artist Preston
Orr. The exhibits open Sept. 10 and continue on view through Oct.
30.
Heriberto Mora was born in a province of Havana, Cuba and educated
at the Fine Arts School of San Alejandro. After emigrating to
Spain, the artist came to the US, settling in the Miami area.
Since then, Mora has had solo exhibitions in Florida and Spain.
His paintings are in private collections in Madrid, Paris, New
York, Bogota, Caracas, Miami and Washington, DC, as well as in
the permanent collection of the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale,
FL.
Mora is a painter of enigmatic and subtle dimensions. Incorporating
a certain humor in his work and playing off the obvious connotations
of objects, the meaning of his paintings are not always immediately
evident. In this way, the artist engages the viewer in unanswerable
questions. Mora's works are solidly constructed compositions of
commonplace objects oddly juxtaposed. In one piece, a man in a
beekeeper's outfit sits on a box; he seems to be reading a book/honeycomb
suspended from a pole overhead. The body of work created for Hodges
Taylor was conceived like "a journey starting in darkness
and finishing in light."
Preston Orr is a painter who uses unconventional materials to
execute his work. The support for his paintings is fiberglass
which the artist utilizes for its translucent qualities. He works
with solid opaque materials, such as plastic letters, pages form
books, string, yarn or grasses, collaged into the work balanced
against translucent and opaque areas of paint. Orr further exploits
the fiberglass surface as is usual. The effect of his work is
similar to that of the conscious and unconscious, some ideas come
to the top, others submerge themselves, waiting to come out another
day.
Orr is a SC native and MFA degree recipient of the Savannah College
of Art and Design. Orr's work has been exhibited in group shows
in New York, Los Angeles, as well as solo and group shows in Savannah,
GA, and Columbia, SC. Awards include a recent commission for Alexander
Hall at Savannah College of Art and Design where Orr is designing
a work to be suspended from the ceiling.
