July Issue 1999
Works by Tom Stanley at Hodges Taylor Gallery
Hodges Taylor Gallery of Charlotte, NC, is pleased to announce the installation of selections from en route to hamlet, a series of works on canvas panels by Tom Stanley. The exhibit will be on veiw from July 1 - Aug. 25.
Stanley is an artist as well as arts administrator with a Master of Art in applied art history degree and a Master of Fine Arts in painting, both from the University of South Carolina. Stanley served as the Director of the Waterworks Visual Arts Center in Salisbury, NC, from 1985 to 1990 and is currently an Associate Professor and Director of the Winthrop University Galleries in Rock Hill, SC.
The series, en route to hamlet, is an ongoing project of Stanley's inspired by the artist's trips down Highway 74 and other rural roads throughout the southeast. The works are acrylic painted on canvas panels which are stylistically diverse and represent an improvisational or "free-floating visual narrative." The artists says of the work, "Hamlet is where John Coltrane was born; Hamlet is also a small town and these images are about a journey...sometimes down rural roads, sometimes down my imagination, sometimes in the place I am currently sitting."
Stanley has exhibited variations of the project at the Green
Hill Center for North Carolina Art, University of South Carolina's
McKissick Museum, the South Carolina State Museum, Florida State
University's Fine Arts Museum and the National Art Club in New
York City. Often installed as a frieze and in grid patterns, each
installation plays off the improvisation within the pieces and
varies with new panels and the different site.
Also on view through Aug, will be works by our regular gallery
artists.
