Randy Shull ---------------------------------------Mark Flowers

Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is proud to present the sculptures of Randy Shull and the mixed media paintings of Mark Flowers as the opening exhibition for the year 2000. The exhibition will open Jan. 7 and continue through Feb. 27.

Randy Shull's sculptures, made of polychromed wood, are frequently functional objects as well as being works of art. His multi-layers of varying colors of paint become obvious in selected small areas where the artist has scraped back into the underlying colors, thereby adding energy to the rich surfaces. They are visually stimulating. Though some may be functional, such as tables, cabinets or chairs, they remain first and foremost sculptures. Form and function blend beautifully in these pieces. Shull's sense of whimsy is exposed in his choice of found objects that are sometimes incorporated in the work.

Mark Flowers takes the two-dimensional aspects of painting into the third dimension through his choice of support materials for the paintings. Giving new life to cast-off objects can mean painting on the underside of a wooden drawer from a demolished chest of drawers. The artist has also established his own powerful symbolism, where he frequently depicts himself as a spinning funnel or bowl.

As a teacher, Flowers frequently finds himself in discussions, seated with others around a table. The paintings of table tops become his landscapes. He is the bowl, others perhaps are spinning plates, and a dialogue begins. Carrying this private scene a bit farther, Flowers enjoys the idea of including Shull's work in the story, playing paintings on wood against wood sculptures, both honoring form, line and texture as well as materials. The line between painting and sculpture blurs. The pleasure derived form making these works as well as viewing them is delightfully obvious.
