Members Show & Photography Projects at The Light Factory

The 1999 Members Show, on view from July 10 to Sept. 5 is an annual, nonjuried exhibition offering members of The Light Factory in Charlotte, NC, the opportunity to show works in a wide variety of styles and media. Todd D. Smith, curator of American Art, Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, serves as awards judge this year.

In addition to a $150 cash award for best of show, gift certificates for lab services have been generously donated by Charles Johnson Color, Quality Chrome Photographic and Digital Services and Kenny Color.

Photography Projects with Charlotte Youth will also be on view from July 10 - Sept. 5. This group exhibition of photographs by Charlotte students highlights this year's community outreach programs at The Light Factory. Supported by grants from the Cultural Education Collaborative, 40 English as a Second Language students at Lincoln Heights Elementary School and Eastway Middle School acquired camera skills to illustrate folk tales they wrote for the project Crow Tales. In addition, 310 sixth graders at McClintock Middle School participated in the Camera Obscura project, a curriculum-based project linking science and social studies through the study of photography. Grants from the North Carolina Arts Council and xpedx allowed 125 eighth graders at Piedmont Open Middle School to study photography, architecture, city planning, graphic design and Web site design as part of the Exploring Our Communities project.

With support from Seeds of Hope at Christ Episcopal Church and the Blumenthal Foundation, The Light Factory offered portrait photography and oral history classes to 22 elementary school students in the Chapel of Christ the King afterschool program. Following an introduction to the civil rights movement and interviewing techniques, the students invited local residents to be photographed and interviewed about their memories of the civil rights movement. This exhibit will be at the Museum of the New South, Charlotte, in Sept.

For the third year, The Light Factory offered photography classes to third graders at The Haven, a Communities-In-Schools site. Students met with Charlotte-based professional photographers and were taught camera techniques and composition principles. Following informational meetings with the participating photographers, the students modeled different approaches by staging their own photo shoots.

Director of education Betsy Bilger gives a gallery talk on Friday, July 9 at 6:30pm during the opening reception.
