Moonshell Art Gallery Presents Works by Wendy Dixon & Stanley Smith

Moonshell Art Gallery on Hilton Head Island, SC, presents works in metal point and wood turning by Wendy Dixon and Stanley Smith. The exhibition will be on view through the month of July.

Hilton Head Artist Wendy Dixon combines elements of fantasy and reality in her metal point drawings. Silverpoint, her favorite medium, became popular during the 14th Century and was used by old masters for portraits and landscapes. It is seldom seen today.

The Artist draws on a prepared surface with a stylus. Metalpoint is an unforgiving medium as errors cannot be erased. Dixon includes goldpoint, copperpoint and prisma color in various drawings.

Her work is featured in S.R.A. McGraw Hill's books, Art Connections and Artists Profiles currently being used in the curriculums of grades 1 through 12 in schools throughout the United States.

Her metalpoints are included in the permanent collections of the Telfair Museum, the National Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian, the Chrysler Museum and The National Museum of Women in the Arts and in numerous private collections.

Stanley Smith is a gifted artist from Charleston who learned the difficult technique of woodturning from his brother. He has been in love with the medium ever since, even though it requires great dexterity and patience.

Smith, working with many different types of wood such as orange sage, purple heart, yellow heart, mahogany, oak and rosewood creates magnificent multi colored vessels with intricate inlays. Although new to the art world, this gifted artists' work is sought out by collectors of fine wood turnings.
