Spirit and Mountains Exhibit at the Paint Spot & Gift Gallery in Black Mountain
Painter Ralph Lewis and Sculptor Karen Kyte join together as the featured artists for the Spirit and Mountains exhibit on view at The Paint Spot & Gift Gallery in Black Mountain, NC, from Oct. 1 - 30.
Lewis' oil paintings reflect the American impressionistic style. His vivid colors and textures draw the viewer to take a closer look. Works in this exhibit are primarily of mountains, a favorite subject for our area. He enjoys painting landscapes inspired by his travels in Ireland and Italy and his residences in New England and Asheville, NC. His paintings have been shown at the Dorcester Art Center in Cambridge, MD, The Sargent Gallery in Newburyport, MA, The Pierce Gallery in Portsmouth, NH, Mathew Burak Gallery in Danville, VT, and the Vermont Studio School in Johnson, VT. He has also exhibited his paintings at the On Exhibit Gallery in Black Mountain.
Lewis studied at the Vermont Studio School, The Brooklyn Museum Art School and the Museum of Modern Art. He also studied with Mexican painter Camilio Egas in New York City and with Robert Scott Jackson, a Massachusetts artist.
Karen Kyte grew up on the plains of South Dakota and her heritage
is Anglo and Native American. Early on she knew that she was an
artist. In 1972, she graduated from State University of SD with
a degree in fine arts. The years since have been spent full of
family and other pursuits, but the connecting thread has always
been her art.
Gallerys in New Mexico and Asheville and Black Mountain in NC
proudly represent Kyte's work. She says, "the objects are
always hand made, always different, always changing, reflections
of the clay and the spirit within me. They are made in the old
ways as I strive to connect with the wise woman inside. Since
all this would be pointless if kept inside, I feel privileged
to share my objects with those that would hear and see".
From her Santa Fe and Singing Elk Collectible Sculptured
Dolls to her unusual Spirit Vessels which include Self Spirit,
Mate Spirit, Dear Ones, Great Spirit, Mother and Child Spirit
and Dream Spirit to her Native American Angel Sculptures,
Kyte's originality and spirituality are evident in her work. The
heads come off each piece and reveal special findings inside,
and each piece comes with the meaning of them written by Kyte.
