Pernille Dake Shows Works at Several Charleston Venues
Pernille Ægidius Dake, winner of the 1999 Piccolo Spoleto
Poster Competition, is showing new works at City Gallery and Blink!,
in Charleston, SC.
The IMPRINTS exhibit, at City Gallery, explores impressions
of human features. It is a play on words as it either captures
the body print in oil, or the memory of human shapes in clay.
It is a projection of how we leave an 'imprint' on each other.
This show will be on view through June 13, 1999.
Yves Klein's body prints have fashioned the inspiration for the
paintings. But, whereas he only used his trademark blue and created
his images with the help of models, these prints are the artists
body wrapped in Saran wrap. The wrap acts as a shield against
the oil paint, but also gives the body a different sense of shape
and texture. This painting process allows to convey a feeling
of alienation as it is the wrap and not the actual body which
releases the paint.
The clay sculptures try to recapture the elusiveness of touch
and memory. Although small in scale they have the power and strength
of a language we are still investigating.
IMPRINTS should be seen as the concretization of the Piccolo
Spoleto poster, In Motion. Both celebrate the joy and beauty
of the human body. Set in different environments of color and
space the human figure is illuminated as the ultimate tangible
as well as cognitive form.
In keeping with the theme of the poster, In Motion, Dake
is also presenting an exhibit entitled, The Body Works!,
at Blink!, located on Queen Street in downtown Charleston. This
show celebrates the human figure and its gestures. Set in different
color and spatial environments the human body is illuminated as
the ultimate tangible as well as cognitive form. The works will
be on display through the month of June.
The images are abstractions of studies done from live model. After
first capturing and exaggerating the model's traits, a recreation
of the form (be it color, setting or actual shapes) emphasizes
considerations of how we all perceive the human form - how we
look at each other. A longing created between the surrounding
space and the human forms fills the paintings with tension and
unity.
The body is our necessary tool for activities and survival; it
is an (obvious) intricate part of us. And yet we often seem to
be out of sorts with it; uncomfortable with ourselves or others
- Set in the intimate setting of the Blink! Gallery the exhibit,
"The Body Works!", inspires you to take second look
at yourself and those around you and rejoice!
Dake was born, raised, and had most of her education from Denmark.
Her art work is represented in collections internationally. Besides
working as an artist she also has her own business selling the
state stone of South Carolina, Winnsboro Blue granite, as well
as pursuing a Masters degree in Arts Administration. "It
is a true honor to be chosen to convey the message of art appreciation
during this festival," she states.
