Textiles, Costumes And Clothing: The Wardrobe Of The Old South on View at the Pickens County Museum
Continuing through Sept. 25, the upstairs gallery at the Pickens County Museum in Pickens, SC, will be the home of the items that were worn by our grandparents and their parents before them. Not only will the clothing and accessories typical of the old Southern wardrobe be on display, but also the tools used to make them. This wonderful trip down the avenues of our memories, Textiles, Costumes and Clothing: the Wardrobe of the Old South will follow a subject oriented timeline from the 19th Century into the 1930's.
Utilizing the collections of the Pickens County Museum, private collections, photographs and reproductions, guest curator, Lois Bro has assembled a variety of objects representing the design, production and utilization of clothing as reflected in our Southern Heritage. From spinning wheels, knitting needles and sewing machines to cotton, leather and lace, every strata of the old Southern society will be represented. Speaking of her interest in the history of clothing, Bro stated, "What people wore has always held a fascination to those who follow. Textiles show us what the clothes were made of and surviving examples let us see how they were utilized."
This entertaining and educational presentation could not have been possible without the work, research and support by Lois Bro, Betsy Dunkle, Carole Tinsley, members of the "Stuffits", and members of the Greenville Doll & Toy Collectors. We would also like to thank B.C. Moore & Sons of Pickens and Robinson's Department Store in Easley, SC, for their assistance in mounting this exhibition.
