Spartanburg County Museum of Art Hosts Three New Shows Through Aug. 17

The Spartanburg County Museum of Art in Spartanburg, SC, is presenting three new exhibits, on view through Aug. 17. The exhibits include: Stoddard & Pàquin, Figures, and COLORS/COLORS II.

Stoddard and Pàquin is an exhibition of paintings and sculptures of abstracted figures and biomorphic forms by Ann Stoddard and Ralph Pàquin. Stoddard's rich, high contrast paintings are mysterious and inviting. Of her works the artist says, "These 'neverlands' are about dividing space and time; creating new and unknown places, seemingly foreign, only because we have not been there yet. The images I use, branch-like or vessel-like, take a closer look at growth and searching, probing a natural world". Stoddard's most recent works include a series of portraits titled Portraits of Modera that coincide with a poem written about Modera who represents every woman whose life has passed through many emotions/concerns. Stoddard is currently the Gallery Coordinator and Adjunct Professor at Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC

Similar to Stoddard, Ralph Pàquin also uses the vessel-like form for structural and symbolic purposes. These vessels take form as large scale abstract figurative sculptures that hint to ancient classical sculpture but reflect the angst of the 20th century. Pàquin states, "Upon the initial viewing of these sculptures they appear powerful, but it is their inner being and concepts that I strive to expose, I am not so concerned with idyllic beauty, as I am with the bisection that forms when carnal meets with spiritualness, wreckage with resilience, substance with emptiness and so on." Pàquin is presently an Associate Professor of art at Presbyterian College. There will be a Gallery Talk by Ann Stoddard and Ralph Pàquin on Aug. 17 at 5:30pm.

Figures is an exhibition of two dimensional and three dimensional works of art by member of a group called Southern Exposure. This exhibit includes works by the following artists: Carol Augthun, Jessica Barnes, David M. Benson, Amy Goldstein-Rice, Claire Miller Hopkins, Linda Page Hudgins, Cynthia Link, Jane Allen Nodine, Sarah Dame Setzer, Doris Turner, Ann Wenz, David Zacharias, and Winston Wingo. Disciplines represented are painting, drawing, collage, ceramics, jewelry, mixed media, and sculpture.

Also on view at the Museum is the exhibit, COLORS/COLORS II, 7th Annual Student Exhibition. COLORS/COLORS II is an open art studio for inner city youth and is a program of the Spartanburg County Museum of Art.
