SC State Museum Exhibit Spotlights South Carolina Master

As both artist and teacher, Charleston, SC's William Halsey has challenged his audiences for more than six decades. The SC State Museum in Columbia, SC, is presenting selected works from this venerable painter/sculptor on the Museum's fourth floor in the exhibit William Halsey. The exhibit will be on view through Oct. 3.

"He was known as South Carolina's preeminent abstract painter," said Curator of Art Robin Waites. "He also was very conscious of surface textures, which this exhibit will show."

The artist connected his work with his surroundings. He translated crumbling stucco buildings around him literally by mixing sand with his paint for added texture, the curator said. "But he also captured the essence of his native city through the incorporation of color, texture and geometry."

The exhibition features 39 paintings, sculptures and collages. But while Halsey, who died earlier this year - was an abstract artist, there will be recognizable objects as well. "Chairs, human figures and buildings are subjects of his work, but all are given Halsey's unique treatment," said Waites.

William Halsey was organized by the Greenville County Museum of Art from public and private collections in South Carolina. In addition to the exhibit organized by the Greenville Museum, the State Museum's presentation will include a selection of Halsey's work from its own permanent collection.
