Edward Betts, internationally known artist, juror, and author,
juried the exhibition and made the following comments to the artists,
"Things to remember: A beautiful subject does not guarantee
a beautiful picture. What you paint is not as important as how
you paint it; a fine painting always transcends its subject. Above
all, be aware of shape and pattern, and think of shapes not just
as description, but as containers for color. Don't exhibit your
work until your have a solid background of craftsmanship, knowledge,
and experience. Bring to each painting you do a strong element
of personality and/or imagination. It is the artist's job to bring
order and readability out of chaos; the viewer should not have
to do your work. My best wishes for a successful exhibition."
A Juror's Critique Video that features a critical review of paintings
in the exhibition was produced and funded by Carolina First Bank
and the Horry Cultural Arts Council. The film, which is an excellent
education in the visual arts, is shown at the museum and is also
available for sale or loan through the museum or SCWS. A color
catalog that reproduces the top thirty award winners was sponsored
by Woman's Medical Center in Conway. Additional program support
was provided by the City of Myrtle Beach and Horry County Accommodations
Tax Fund, SC Arts Commission, and many other business and individuals
donors.
The South Carolina Watercolor Society (SCWS), a non-profit organization,
is the largest statewide visual artists guild representing more
